Fiber gasket material is made through a process similar to paper making. Individual strands of fiber are spread out and fortified with a resin material. This mixture will dry to form sheets that are easy to cut to a variety of shapes. Different types of fiber are used to produce gaskets with different strengths, compressibility and temperature ratings for a wide variety of application uses.

Rubber gaskets and gasket material is made from synthetic rubber. By using synthetic rubber, these gaskets and materials function over a wider temperature range and are less vulnerable to damage from ultraviolet (UV) light. The most commonly used materials are nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), neoprene and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber.
